Ozone therapy–Demystified!

Mention the term “Ozone Therapy” and most people react with a mixture of horror and confusion.  Isn’t ozone bad for you?  That is, after all, what we have all been led to believe for a long time.  The weather man (or woman) was continually warning us about the dangerously high ozone level and runners were cautioned not to go out at these times.

But what about the perilous destruction of the ozone layer? Isn’t the loss of ozone bad? All this can seem confusing and contradictory.  So if you are confused about the increasing use of ozone for healing, well, you’re pretty normal.  Ozone is a type of oxygen molecule that is formed in nature.  All of us are familiar with the representation of oxygen as “O2”, Like oxygen, ozone is also a gas and is portrayed as “O3”.  Basically, it is just O2 with one more oxygen atom bonded onto it. It is this extra oxygen that is responsible for the healing effect of medical ozone. Ever noticed the slightly sweet and clean smell after a thunderstorm? That is the smell of ozone that was produced in the storm.

Chemically speaking, ozone is unstable and wants to let go of this extra oxygen atom and go back to being O2.  But the extra oxygen atoms need something else to attach to.  Lucky for us they have an affinity for toxins in our environment. The air after a storm smells “clean” because the ozone bonded with impurities (pollution) in the air and removed them.  This process is called oxidation, making ozone beneficial in many commercial applications, such as air and water purification.  But this extra oxygen also has the ability to bind to toxins in the human body as well.  Additionally, it can destroy bacteria, viruses, parasites, amoeba, mold, and fungi.  It is 35 times more powerful than chlorine and yet leaves no harmful chemicals or byproducts behind.  If used properly and in the proper amounts, it is completely non-toxic.

Your body has the potential to renew and regenerate itself. When it becomes sick it is because this potential has been blocked. One of the primary reasons for this blockage is the accumulation of toxins held in the tissues.  The oxidation potential of ozone can easily render these toxins harmless, stimulating your body to remove them and go back to doing what it does best – heal itself.

Steam therapy has been used for a long time to help the body rid itself of toxins through sweating. As the pores open and the millions of sweat glands start to excrete, the body rids itself of metabolic and other waste products.  Additionally, artificially induced hyperthermia (rising body temperature) results in the destruction of bacteria and viruses.  Hippocrates, the founder of Western medicine said, “Give me the power to create a fever, and I shall cure any dis-ease.”  Fever is part of the body’s natural healing response.  During a fever, the functioning of the immune system is stimulated, while the growth of bacteria is forced to slow down.

The addition of ozone to this age old therapy creates an extremely powerful method of detoxification and oxygenation of the body.  Ozone steam therapy has been common in Europe for over 50 years and is becoming more popular in the US.  While inside the steam therapy cabinet ozone can easily penetrate your skin, oxygenating the blood, lymph, and fat.  Since most of the toxins in your body are held in the lymph and the fat, this treatment is one of the most effective ways to eliminate them from the body.  Allowing ozone in and toxins out creates the ideal condition for healing and regeneration.

Published papers have demonstrated the healing effect of ozone steam therapy on many conditions, including interstitial cystitis, chronic hepatitis, herpes infections, dental infections, diabetes, Lyme disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, macular degeneration, and more.  Additionally, ozone steam therapy has been noted to stimulate blood flow, reduce chronic aches and pains in muscles and joints, improve skin tone, promote better sleep, and contribute to a greater overall sense of wellbeing.

Cupping. How does it work? What is it good for?

Cupping is one of the oldest methods of healing used in traditional Chinese medicine. The process involves creating a vacuum inside of a “cup” and placing it on the skin.  The vacuum sucks some of the skin up into the cup, which produces the healing effect.  Heavy glass cups, as seen on the left,  are the traditional method and allow the acupuncturist to clearly see the skin and evaluate the effects of treatment.  This method requires the introduction of a flame into the cup to produce the vacuum.  Today, many practitioners use smaller plastic cups and a vacuum pump to suck the air out.  These can be very effective for many conditions but don’t provide the same range of treatment opportunities as the glass cups.

Depending on the condition being treated, the cups will generally be left in place from 5 to 10 minutes and occasionally longer. Often, several cups will be placed on a patient’s body at the same time. Some practitioners will also apply small amounts of medicated oils or herbal oils to the skin just before the cupping procedure, which lets them move the cups up and down along particular acupuncture channels or muscle pathways after they have been applied.

An old Chinese medical maxim states:

”Where there’s free flow there is no pain.  Where there is no free flow there is pain.”

Pain in this context refers not only to physical pain but to all dis-ease.  The vast majority of all illness and disease comes from stagnation, congestion and blockage of the body’s fluids, including blood and lymph. The suction applied by cupping breaks up that congestion, and restores a free flow of fluids in your body. Remove the stagnation, and you remove the ” pain”.  This is as true of muscle pains as it is for internal medicine conditions.

By improving the circulation of blood, lymph and other vital fluids, cupping disperses blockages caused by congestion of toxins, improving the elimination of wastes from the body. Consequently, cupping not only improves the circulation of blood and lymph but it also improves the functioning of the  nervous system, allowing for a profound sense of relaxation.

Locally, the most obvious benefit of cupping are a relief of pain while promoting relaxation and increased suppleness of stiff tendons and muscles. But cupping can also have a dramatic detoxifying effect on the skin by circulating the blood and removing toxins. When applied to the digestive organs, cupping causes increases in digestive fluids and and enhances motility in the digestive tract, promoting better digestion and elimination.  In fact, cupping can produce a wide range of benefits ranging from the elimination of congestion and coughing associated with common colds, to cellulite reduction and other cosmetic conditions. It can have broad effects on the human body.

But why has cupping been so popular at the Rio Olympics? Cupping helps to relieve the aches and pains caused by training and competing and speeds up recovery.  These strenuous activities create injury to the muscles, which causes micro bleeding and congestion of blood and fluids.  This not only causes pain but also can lead to reduced performance.  As stated above, cupping releases the stuck blood and encourages healing. In addition, the increase in blood flow to the area means that the tissues receive more nutrients and oxygen for faster recovery. Additionally, many athletes combine cupping with acupuncture or massage to receive the optimum benefit from the treatment.

Cupping is a part of an entire medical system that was developed in China over thousands of years.  In this comprehensive system cupping was not just used as a stand-alone treatment but was always just a part of a more comprehensive treatment plan. While cupping can be used for temporary relief of muscle aches and pains, a more whole-istic approach is necessary for complete healing and restoration to optimum health. This system includes not only cupping and acupuncture but also food and herbal therapy along with a prescription for the proper type of exercise for the patient.  This is a comprehensive treatment plan that requires skill and  knowledge of  Classical Chinese medicine to properly implement.  Please feel free to contact us for further information or to schedule an introductory consult.

Is Detoxification Necessary ?

People frequently ask me if I think that “detoxing” is necessary.  My simple answer “Yes”.  It is important to realize that your body is already designed to eliminate substances that are “toxic” to it.  If these substances were allowed to remain they would impede the normal cellular functions in your body, ultimately leading to poor health, premature aging and death.  In recent years there has been a lot of emphasis on toxins that we absorb from the outside through food, water, and air exposure.

Many of these are industrial pollutants and food additives that our ancestors never encountered and have been shown to impede body function.  Thus they do indeed need to be escorted out before they cause health problems. But equally important are the toxins that are produced within our own body.  These substances are the waste products that are regularly produced as a part of normal metabolism.  As body parts wear out they are replaced cell by cell on a constant basis.  The breakdown of the old cells releases substances that have to get out of your body so that the new cells can function properly.  If they can’t get out efficiently they remain as “toxins”, clogging up normal cell function.  Similarly, the burning of fats or sugars for fuel in our cells creates metabolic waste.  This waste is similar to the exhaust gasses that come out of a car’s tailpipe or a factory smokestack.  If you block your car’s tailpipe while it is running the motor will soon stop due to the buildup of waste products.  Likewise, if the metabolic toxins in your body build up it will not run well (aka, chronic illness) and will eventually stop.

Thus the degree of health you experience is fundamentally dependent on how well you can eliminate these toxic waste products.  Although other organs play a part in your body’s detoxification pathways, the liver is by far the most important organ in the detoxification process.  Your liver is to your body what your car’s oil filter is to its engine.  All of your blood circulates through your liver many times during the day.  It is way more sophisticated than a car oil filter but it essentially serves the same purpose, filtering out harmful substances.  Unlike your car oil filter, the liver is self-cleaning and dumps the toxins out by way of your urine and bowel movement.  However, if the load of toxins is too much for the liver to process at one time, it just sends them back into the blood to circulate until it has the capacity to deal with them.  Unfortunately, our current diets of processed foods, along with the dramatic increase in industrial pollutants, has overwhelmed the detoxification process for most of us.  We now all have measurable levels of industrial pollutants in our bodies.   The current hype around detoxification leads many well-meaning people to go on crash detoxification programs.  This approach often serves to rapidly pull large quantities of toxins out of your body’s “safe storage” areas.  This can overwhelm the liver, resulting in a large amount of toxins back into general circulation.  This is the origin of so called “detox reactions”.  Thus, rapid detoxification programs can contribute to more problems than they resolve.

In summary, detoxification is important to your health. However, to be safe it needs to be done slowly while giving the liver the nutrients necessary to properly carry out this process.  If you are interested in learning how to safely and effectively detoxify your body (and you should be) please contact our office to schedule a time where we can set up a program that is right for your body.

Go Green!

Green powders are THE dirt-simple and inexpensive way to:

  • Nourish yin and blood,
  • Clear heat of all kinds, and even
  • Drain dampness while moistening dry intestines (i.e. resulting in constipation with dry, bound stools)

In Western medical lingo, green powders keep your body hydrated. Simple as that.

Many (most) people exist in a state of semi-dehydration. How can it be otherwise?

Coffee, alcohol, stress, smoking and life (i.e. aging) all dry you out. Drinking more water won’t necessarily solve this problem since it tends to go straight through you.

But Green Powders actually moisten your tissues and intestines and even help build your blood by helping you absorb the liquid you drink and by gently cleaning out your dried out guts.

Find one you like and take a heavy dose first thing in the morning. You cannot help but feel the difference!

Are Body Toxins making you sick?

Optimum energy and radiant health are the products of internal cleansing. Each of us understands how important it is to be clean the outside, but do not realize it’s even more important to be clean on the inside!

There is no doubt about it we do not live in a pristine world. We live in an environment unlike any in history. In today’s world of processed foods and environmental pollution, toxic substances exist almost everywhere.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), over 35% of the food testes in 1998 contained pesticide residues. Fifty-three pesticides classified as “carcinogens” are presently registered for use on major crops, including apples, tomatoes and potatoes. Additionally more than 10,000 additives are added to our food supply. In fact, an average American eats about 142 pounds of additives a year.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), more and 1,000,000 Americans drink water laced with pesticides. In 2000 alone, more than 4 billion pounds of chemicals were released into the ground and over 260 million pounds of chemicals were discharged into surface waters, i.e. lakes and rivers, making fish unsafe to eat and water unsafe to swim in or drink.

How does Detoxification Work?

The process of bio-detoxification takes place primarily in the liver, They liver is kept organ in out body’s self defense system, Detoxification is largely accomplished in 2 phases. In phase 1, the body’s enzymes activate the toxic substance to make them more accessible in Phase II. In Phase II, specific enzymes convert toxins into water soluble and harmless molecules that are then eliminated by the body.

The Detoxification process is critically dependent on an adequate amount of nutrition, specific vitamins, enzymes, and minerals. Without these specific nutrient, the liver cannot eliminate toxins. Without elimination, these stores toxins may be slowly released into the blood, contributing to many chronic illness, including some cancers.

Biotics has developed a powerful detoxification program that prepares your body to best adapt to a nutritional regimen. The program requires only 10 days and comes with support material and online reference to guide you though your detoxification! The 10 day bio-detoxification Kit comes with Bio- detox Packs ( 30 packets of mixed supplements) 2 NurtiClear (Metabolic clearing support formula) 1 Whey Protein Isolate ( High quality source of protein that is soothing for the gut) with 3 different flavor options, Original, Vanilla, and Chocolate! Weekly Product Spotlight

In Chinese medicine, people who contract airborne allergies, ipso facto, suffer from a defensive qi vacuity. Since the defensive qi issues from the middle burner, this defensive qi vacuity is mostly due to a chronically vacuous and weak spleen failing to engender the lungs and defensive qi. Because of the close reciprocal relationship between the spleen and kidneys, there may also be a kidney qi vacuity. In either case, external wind evils may take advantage of this vacuity to enter the body where they obstruct the lungs’ diffusion and downbearing. Because the patient’s spleen is habitually vacuous, there is a tendency to phlegm dampness. This phlegm may be hidden or deep-lying, meaning that, during ordinary times, it is not apparent. However, whenever the lungs’ diffusion and downbearing of fluids is inhibited, this phlegm backs up and spills over, thus becoming apparent as mucus.

Therefore, this formula is based on the saying, “The spleen is the root of phlegm engenderment; the lungs are the place where phlegm is stored.” Within it, Codonopsis, Astragalus, Coix, and Disocorea supplement the lungs, spleen, and kidneys, the three viscera which govern water metabolism in the body. Terminalia and Schisandra secure the lungs and specifically stop runny nose. Ledebouriella and Schizonepeta relatively gently dispel wind evils from the exterior while not damaging the defensive qi. Flos Magnoliae and Mentha open the orifices and free the flow of the nose, thus relieving nasal congestion. Periostracum Cicadae dispels wind and stops itching. Platycodon guides the other medicinals to the lungs and also transforms phlegm. Dry Ginger warms the lungs and transforms phlegm. The combination of Coix and Alisma seeps dampness via urination and, therefore, helps Atractylodes eliminate dampness. Licorice harmonizes all the other medicinals in the formula at the same time as helping fortify the spleen and supplement the qi.

GABA for Relaxation

The human nervous system is vastly complex as it coordinates innumerable processes via neurotransmitters. These chemical messengers are required for everything from signaling the heart and lungs to function, to enabling the body to sleep so regeneration and repair can occur. Neurotransmitter levels affect emotions and appetite, as well as energy levels. Unfortunately, neurotransmitters operate within a very narrow range and their balance can be easily disrupted by a variety of factors including genetics, immune function, diet, stress, and general chemical exposure. Gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) is a primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. It is one of the ‘feel good’ neurotransmitters that also includes Serotonin, Dopamine, and Norepinehprine.  It is commonly referred to as the anti-anxiety neurotransmitter. Patients with low levels of GABA often complain of, or present with, hyperactivity, anxiety, irritability, altered mood, and sleep difficulties. PheniTropic™ contains beta-Phenyl-gamma-aminobutyric acid (Phenibut), a natural derivative of GABA. Phenibut has been demonstrated to have a calming effect and may assist in instances of stress, anxiety, and even the improvement of impaired sleep.
